Regulation is individual and changes with context.
Sleep, pain, stress, sensory load, health, relationships, predictability, communication access, the environment, and available support can all affect capacity. A strategy that helps one person—or helps on one day—may not fit another person or another day.
Regulation and co-regulation can include:
- noticing body signals without judgment;
- reducing, changing, or organizing demands and sensory input;
- adding predictability, processing time, choice, movement, or rest;
- using communication supports and familiar tools; and
- connecting with a trusted person who can listen, slow down, and help make the next step more accessible.
Important: Support should not be measured only by whether someone looks calm or compliant. The goal is access, safety, dignity, communication, participation, and recovery.

SENSORY INTEGRATION THERAPY
A specific therapy is different from everyday sensory support.
Occupational therapy using Ayres Sensory Integration® (OT-ASI) is a specific occupational-therapy approach. It begins with individualized evaluation, connects sensory and motor needs with participation in everyday activities, and follows defined intervention principles. It is not the name for every movement break, fidget, weighted item, calming space, or list of sensory activities.
Everyday accommodations and regulation supports can still be meaningful. When a sensory intervention is being prescribed as therapy, assessment, individual goals, professional training, monitoring, and the person's own experience matter.
What the research section will always show
- What was studied and who participated;
- what researchers found without turning findings into promises;
- what remains uncertain or needs more study; and
- the original source and the date the library reviewed it.
Research findings can differ across intervention type, population, outcome, setting, and whether the approach was delivered with fidelity. No sensory tool works for every person.

Window of Tolerance
What can I do from where I am right now?
A simple way to think about capacity, overwhelm, and the conditions that help us access more of ourselves.
Start here: what does “window of tolerance” mean?
The Window of Tolerance is a framework associated with psychiatrist and interpersonal-neurobiology educator Dr. Daniel J. Siegel. In plain language, it describes a range in which we have enough access to ourselves to take in information, think, communicate, learn, connect, and respond without becoming too overwhelmed or too shut down.
Being inside that window does not mean feeling perfectly calm. It can include challenge, emotion, effort, and discomfort. The important question is whether enough capacity is still available for you to stay present and respond.
Too much activation
You might notice racing thoughts, panic, irritability, sensory overload, agitation, urgency, or feeling unable to settle. Different people experience this differently.
Within your workable range
You may still be working hard, but you have enough access to think, communicate, make choices, learn, connect, or take the next step.
Too little activation
You might notice shutdown, numbness, exhaustion, disconnection, brain fog, heaviness, or difficulty initiating. Different people experience this differently too.
A strengths-based reflection
Instead of beginning with “What is wrong?” try asking:
- What can you do?
- What helps you feel safe?
- What environment helps you access your skills?
- What support do you need?
- What can we change around you so you have a better chance to succeed?
- What is the next step that is actually accessible for you?
These questions are not about lowering expectations or pretending barriers do not exist. They help shift attention toward access: what conditions, supports, pacing, communication, or environmental changes may make participation more possible.

Keeping the terms separate helps people understand what is being offered, what evidence applies, and when individualized professional assessment matters.
What is OT-ASI?
Occupational therapy using Ayres Sensory Integration® (OT-ASI) is a specific occupational-therapy approach. It begins with individualized evaluation, links sensory and motor foundations with meaningful participation, uses active engagement in a tailored environment, and follows defined intervention principles and fidelity measures.
What is not automatically OT-ASI?
A movement break, fidget, weighted item, calming space, sensory bin, environmental accommodation, or list sometimes called a “sensory diet” is not automatically Ayres Sensory Integration therapy. Everyday supports can still be useful, but they should not be presented as the same intervention or as universal treatment.
What does the evidence say?
Evidence depends on the intervention, population, outcome, setting, individual goals, and whether the approach was delivered with fidelity. A 2026 systematic review examined OT-ASI for children and youth and reported evidence related to individual goals, functioning, and participation while also identifying areas where more research is needed. Findings about one intervention or group should not be generalized to every sensory tool or every person.

Mental-health experiences are diverse and should not be reduced to stereotypes. Compassion and access to appropriate care matter more than assumptions.

Sensory overload
Sounds, lights, touch, movement, smells, crowds, internal body signals, or combinations of input can become too much. The helpful response may be environmental change, space, predictability, or individualized support.
ADHD
ADHD may affect attention regulation, initiation, working memory, time, emotion, motivation, and executive function in different ways. It is not a measure of intelligence or effort.
Autism
Autistic people are not one story. Communication, sensory experiences, interests, support needs, movement, identity, and daily life vary greatly. Autistic voices belong at the center of autism learning.
Learning differences
People may learn, read, write, process, remember, calculate, or demonstrate understanding in different ways. Access and competence are not the same thing.
Communication differences
Speech is only one form of communication. People may use AAC, gestures, typing, sign, facial expression, behavior, partner-assisted communication, or combinations of methods.
Concussion / brain injury awareness
Some people may experience headaches, fatigue, sensory sensitivity, dizziness, slowed processing, memory changes, or fluctuating capacity after brain injury. Symptoms and recovery paths vary and deserve individualized medical guidance.
Cognitive fatigue
Thinking, processing, reading, conversation, decision-making, screens, or busy environments can require more energy than they appear to from the outside.
Migraines + episodic conditions
Episodic conditions may be highly disruptive even when a person appears well between episodes. Light, sound, movement, cognition, pain, and participation can change quickly.

Chronic illness
Many chronic illnesses are invisible and can involve fluctuating symptoms, energy, pain, cognition, appointments, treatment demands, or uncertainty that others may not see.
Disability
Disability is part of human diversity. Support needs, identity, access barriers, accommodations, strengths, and preferences vary widely; dignity and autonomy do not depend on independence.
Postpartum transitions
Postpartum life can involve physical recovery, sleep disruption, identity shifts, caregiving demands, emotional changes, and major changes in routine and support needs.

Caregiving can carry love, meaning, logistical demands, advocacy, responsibility, uncertainty, and fatigue at the same time.
Parenting stress
Parenting can involve joy and connection alongside time pressure, responsibility, uncertainty, interrupted rest, decision fatigue, and competing needs.
Financial stress
Financial pressure can affect safety, choices, access, sleep, concentration, relationships, and capacity. It is a real layer of stress even when others cannot see it.
Loneliness + isolation
Someone can feel lonely while surrounded by people. Connection, belonging, access, communication, transportation, health, and life transitions can all shape isolation.
Major life transitions
Graduation, employment changes, caregiving shifts, moves, relationships, loss, disability, retirement, and other transitions can temporarily or permanently change a person's capacity and support needs.
